Because of the surprisingly good results with crayons for textiles, I skipped the pencil-tracing and separate painting with black, and just used a black crayon to directly trace the original. Then, I filled the background sky with blue paint, a broad brush, and varying amounts of water.
That had to dry for a day, so I filled in the other colors on a subsequent day.
